What Is The Monthly Charge For Mini Tivo
Prototype app running on Apple TV.In a world that’s dominated by streaming options, there remains an inconvenient truth. No matter how many options you have, the one thing you want to watch right now is only on live TV.No matter how much the entertainment industry tries to shift away from over-the-air and cable television, the fact remains that decades of consumption habits are deeply ingrained in the viewing public. And OTA digital channels still remain the most cost effective way to get basic TV.
As long as your signal is good, you can get all the major networks and plenty of local stations. But you have to watch them in real time. Gone is the ability to watch things on your schedule. You’re right back to the “good ol’ days” of being beholden to the network’s timeline, not your own.
If you want to record, time shift, skip commercials, or track down shows that move from time slot to time slot, you need a DVR.That’s why I’m glad that TiVo unveiled a solid strategy at this year’s CES to not only make life better for the customers they have, but draw in those who haven’t yet taken the plunge.Bolt OTAThe biggest new product of the last few months is still the Bolt OTA. As I said, TiVo’s suped-up over-the-air DVR is the best companion you could ask for when it comes to cutting the cord. Not only do you get a device that can aggregate all of your streaming services and record over-the-air digital HD broadcasts, you get TiVo’s best-in-class search algorithms, scheduling, and extras like commercial skip. The TLDR is that if you’ve decided you want to ditch cable, you need this box.TiVo MiniSo the Bolt OTA the perfect solution for your main TV, but what about the rest of the house? Assuming you don’t just watch TV in one place, you need a way to get what’s on your Bolt OTA to the other spots in your house. The TiVo Mini with its built in MOCA or Ethernet networking is a great solutionbut only if you have an Ethernet port or cable outlet in the room to which you’re streaming. That’s why TiVo unveiled at CES a new wireless USB adapter upgraded to the 802.11ac standard.
It’s faster and more compatible with modern wifi networks. More importantly, getting it to work reliably is something that most consumers can understand. The problem with the TiVo Mini’s reliance on Ethernet ports or cable outlets is that Ethernet ports are uncommon and if something goes wrong with MOCA (and with MOCA, something always goes wrong), you have to call in a specialist to upgrade your cable infrastructure. With wifi connectivity, you should be able to stream live TV and recorded shows from your Bolt seamlessly and still enjoy all the skip and quick view features of the regular TiVo experience.TiVo AppWhich brings us to the news that had the TiVo community buzzing, the reveal of the TiVo app. Well, “apps” would be a more appropriate way to describe it, since there are three seperate teams working on apps for three distinct platforms.
Prototype app running on Amazon Fire TV CubeAndroid TV is the first and this is a good time to remind everyone that Amazon’s vaunted Fire TV platform is built on the bones of Google’s TV software. This is the app that you’ll be able to load on your Fire TV sticks, and televisions. With the app, you’ll be getting a very TiVo Mini type experience. You’ll be able to navigate the library on your associated Bolt device, manage your OnePass subscriptions, watch Live TV, and stream recordings. The Apple TV app pictured above will take advantage of the touch remote and use the extra processing power available on the device to improve performance.
Prototype Tivo app running on RokuThe Roku app’s secret weapon is compatibility. Other than a few Roku devices that are no longer supported by Roku itself, the TiVo app will work on nearly every Roku dongle, set, and box. While the Android and Apple apps will give you the purest “TiVo-like” experience, Roku’s development rules require strict adherence to UI guidelines.

So you’ll be seeing your TiVo through a Roku lense. How True To The TiVo Experience Is It?The common detractor for all of these versions of the app is that they’ll only support 720p streaming. In order to maintain stream performance, recordings have to be transcoded, which equates to a downgrade in picture quality. But unless you’re used to watching everything in 4k resolution, you shouldn’t even notice it.The TiVo app also won’t be able to handle voice searches (none of their partners will allow deep access to the vocal processing available on their platforms) or commercial skip (though that may come after the app is released). The big upside for the TiVo app is that you don’t have to buy another piece of hardware or figure out how to sideload TiVo onto your smart device. You get access to all of your recordings, all of your Live TV, and you can get access to your streaming services however you please, either through your TiVo or via an app on the device you have. So the question remains, won’t this hurt sales of TiVo Minis?Speaking to Ted Malone, VP of Consumer Products & Services at TiVo, he acknowledge that the new app may “cannibalize sales of the Mini” but sees it increasing sales of the Bolt. This is the breakthrough development I’ve been looking for, the one that will finally convince me to give up cable.
With an antenna and a Bolt OTA, plus the TiVo app on my smart devices, I can get absolutely everything I want to watch without a monthly subscription to channels I don’t use. When Will Everything Be Available? The TiVo Bolt OTA is available now. The new TiVo Mini wifi adapter is coming in a few months and will cost $59.99 ($20 less than the current MOCA bridge). The TiVo app will be farther out – expect to see that at the end of the summer, maybe just before football season starts up again. Even better, it will be free to download, you just need a Bolt for the app to talk to.Speaking of football, I’ll have some fun TiVo news coming up soon for all of you who enjoy the Big Game, but really are just here for the commercials.
